Overview
The Calculated Product Scorecard at Crestron was a team project from the "Internnovation" event, designed to streamline product decision-making through the creation of a prototype dashboard.
Problem
Crestron needed to optimize product investment strategies due to limited resources and an extensive portfolio. The goal was to identify the ideal number of product launches annually, streamline the design and launch processes, and establish effective metrics for measuring success — aligning resource allocation with revenue-generating potential to enhance overall efficiency and effectiveness.
Process
Built a scoring framework with stakeholders, then translated it into a dashboard prototype the leadership team could pilot.
🤺 Challenge
My team, the Tech Trailblazers, consisted of interns from various backgrounds at Crestron Electronics. Upon formation, we were assigned different projects, which encouraged us to develop solutions to key questions, such as:
- How should Crestron prioritize product investments?
- What is the optimal number of annual product launches?
- What does the product design and launch process entail? How do we measure success?
We identified that Crestron needed to refine its product investment strategies due to an overwhelming portfolio that strained resources.
📉 Resource Strain in Product Strategy
Crestron's historical focus on launching new products has resulted in resource depletion. Although the company boasts an extensive portfolio of over 2,000 SKUs, only about 200 generate 90% of its revenue. This discrepancy highlights a misalignment between product offerings and market performance, emphasizing the urgent need for a more strategic approach to product investment and development within my team.
💻 Internnovation Meetings & Design
To create an effective solution, my team organized several brainstorming meetings and dedicated time to generate ideas independently. When we developed the product scorecard concept, we discussed its feasibility and whether we could deliver a working design in time for our showcase. After outlining the design elements, I suggested creating a clickable prototype in Figma — offering a polished look that allowed us to communicate our ideas effectively and make a strong pitch to our audience.

🔮 Future Enhancements
If I could go back in time to enhance the user experience of my intern team's project, I would consider the following improvements:
- Pitch that we allocate time for front-end development.
- Consider more research options to base our product on.
- Reach out to the event coordinator/manager for more details.
